About this area

The frame that sets the face

The brow is the line that frames the eye and, more than almost any other feature, sets the expression a face wears at rest. A brow that sits high and even reads as open and awake. One that has come down, or sits unevenly, can lend a tired, stern, or quizzical look that has little to do with how a person actually feels.

Because the brow is moved by muscle, much of its position is open to careful, conservative work. A relaxer placed to quiet the muscles that pull the brow down lets the lifting muscle raise it a millimeter or two, and an uneven pair can be eased back toward balance. What muscle cannot do, once the upper face has truly descended, belongs to a surgical hand, and we are plain about where that line falls.

How this area changes over time

How the brow comes down

For most of life the lifting muscle holds the brow at its natural height. From the thirties and forties the downward muscles begin to gain on it, and the brow settles a little lower, often unevenly, one side coming down before the other. At this stage the change is largely muscular, and the most answerable.

From the fifties onward the descent is more often structural, as the skin and tissue of the upper face lose their firmness and come down in earnest. A relaxer can no longer meaningfully lift what has structurally fallen, and the honest answer turns to a surgical brow or lid lift. Reading which stage a brow is in is the whole of the consultation.
