Concerns We Treat

Lip Volume & Definition

Lips that have lost a little of their fullness and the clean edge of their border, met with hydration rather than excess.

What it is

Lip volume and definition is the considered enhancement of the lip's shape, fullness, and border, distinct from the more specific work of restoring lips that have thinned with the years. It is the work patients ask for when they want a more defined cupid's bow, a slightly more balanced upper to lower lip ratio, a sharper line where the colored lip meets the surrounding skin, or a gently more hydrated surface, regardless of age.

This work is paced and proportionate. It asks for restraint, an understanding of the face the lip belongs to, and a willingness to refine across visits rather than to ask for a complete change in a single afternoon. Done well, it reads as the lip the patient might have had all along.

Why Patients Seek Treatment

Treatment for lip volume and definition suits the patient who wants to refine the lip in proportion to their own face, who is comfortable with a paced approach across visits, and who is honest with themselves about what kind of lip they want their face to carry. The work is conservative by approach and most rewarding when planned across small steps rather than asked for in a single dramatic correction.

It also suits those who want to begin lip work early and gently, before age-related thinning has progressed. A small amount of considered work in the late twenties or thirties reads more honestly across the decades than a large correction begun in the fifties.

What causes it

Patients pursue lip work for a range of reasons. Some have lips that read asymmetrical or out of proportion with the rest of the face, a feature carried since childhood. Others have a less defined cupid's bow than they would like, or a thin upper lip relative to the lower. Some are addressing the early thinning that comes with the years before it has progressed; others simply want more hydrated lips that read with a softer surface and a clearer border.

Each of these is a different question with a different answer. The work of consultation is to understand which of them brings the patient in, since the right treatment for one is not the right treatment for another.

Common Signs

You may notice:

  • A less defined cupid's bow than you would like, with the central peak softer than the surrounding lip
  • An upper lip that reads thin relative to the lower, or a lower lip that reads heavier
  • A blurred line where the colored lip meets the surrounding skin, making lipstick harder to keep precise
  • Lips that read dry or matte in photographs, even when feeling hydrated

Why it changes over time

The structural elements of the lip, the volume of the body, the definition of the border, the proportion of upper to lower, are largely set by genetics and remain stable through young adulthood. The surface quality of the lip, however, responds more to daily care, sun exposure, hydration, and habits like smoking.

From the late thirties onward, the lip begins to thin gradually, a separate concern more fully addressed on the Thinning Lips page. Patients pursuing definition work in their twenties or early thirties are typically working with what they have always carried; those in their forties and beyond are often combining definition with the early stages of restoration.
