Lines around the mouth are the fine vertical creases that form on and above the upper lip, sometimes called lip lines or smoker's lines, where lipstick tends to feather. They come from the constant movement of the lip, from sun, and from the thinning of the lip and skin over the years.
They are met in different ways depending on their depth. The surface lines answer best to resurfacing, deeper ones to a little filler, and a light relaxer can ease the puckering muscle that presses them in. Most often the right answer is a combination.
Treatment suits the patient bothered by vertical lip lines and willing to match the approach to their depth, often across more than one visit, and to support the result with sun protection. It is at its best as a softening, since these lines are rarely erased entirely.
The lip is in near-constant motion, and the muscle that rings it, the orbicularis oris, folds the skin above it with every purse and sip and word. Over the years those folds settle into fixed lines, hastened by sun, by the natural thinning of the lip, and by smoking, which both creases the lip and degrades its collagen.

These lines tend to appear from the forties onward, though earlier in those who smoke or have had heavy sun. They deepen as the lip thins and the skin loses collagen, moving from lines seen only in movement to lines present at rest. Because they are driven by several causes at once, they are read for depth and origin before a treatment is chosen.
